The 30 Year Reunion for South Garland High School Class of 1972 is now a wild memory! Thanks to all who helped plan the Reunion, and thanks to everyone who participated. If you did not attend, we missed you and someone during the night asked where you where. There was an informal mixer on Friday night at the Wilson World Hotel, a picnic at the Wynne Park (the old Centerville Park), and the main event at Eddie Dean's Ranch on Saturday night.
There was an informal mixer Friday night July 19 at the WILSON WORLD HOTEL located at 2325 N. Stemmons Fwy. We occupied the "DALLAS Room", spilled out into the Bar, took over the hallway outside the Bar, and then the lobby of the Hotel. There were about 90 people that made it to the mixer. The WILSON WORLD HOTEL blocked out at least 20 rooms for our use. They offered a reduced rate for the rooms. There was a Mary Kay convention that weekend at the Convention Center, and many of the conventioneers stayed there also. The mixer started about 7:00 PM and by 3:00 AM there were still people talking and partying. The bartender thought he was going to leave about Midnight, but we kept him hopping until he closed (by law) at 2:00. He had to restock the bar several times. Our class retains the reputation for the best parties.
The picnic was on Saturday July 20 at the Lon L. Wynne Park (formerly Centerville Park) at Glenbrook and Centerville on Duck Creek from 10 AM to 1 PM. About 50 people made it to the picnic. Although there were lots of picnic tables and grassy expanses, everyone hung around in the parking lot under the shade of a big tree standing and talking for three hours or more. If anyone brought a picnic lunch, no one took the time to eat.
The Reunion on Saturday Night July 20 took place at The Ranch in Downtown Dallas located at 944 Lamar St. in Dallas. We had a buffet with Bar-B-Que and more. There was Sausage rolled in French Bread baggetts and sliced Julienne. There were Quesadillas, fruit, and deserts. The buffet was selected instead of a sit-down meal to create a more informal atmosphere and enchourage mixing and mingling. There was a cash bar. They must have heard about us from the Hotel, because there were 3 bartenders. The event started around 7:00 and was to last until 12:00. When it looked like everyone was just getting started, the Reunion Committee paid the Security Guard to stay until 2:00 AM and Eddie Deen kept the Ranch House open for us. The Ranch is just over a block south of the DART light rail station at the Convention Center. ![]()
We used Great Reunions to help us in our address search and to provide the deposits for the room at Eddie Deen's and the catering. A biography book was given to pre-payed ticket holders at the reunion. If you did not get one, you can order one from Great Reunions.
For the first part of the evening, we had a DJ playing our requests. We told him to be ready to play the oldies that we grew up with from the late 60's and early 70's. We provided him with a list of all your suggestions you sent in to the website.
Tommy Lester and Larry Martin presented a nostalgia video at the Reunion. A video message from Bonnie Burchfield preceeded the nostalgia video. The video had stills and movie clips from our High School years. Additional video from the Reunion will be added to the video. The video will be available for purchase. Check the webpage for the offer.
Several people got together and hired "The Hillbillies From Outer Space" (Ken Waller & Randy Rodden) as a band for the Reunion. The band started about 10:00 and played the rest of the evening. There was a really nice memorabelia display at the Reunion from South Garland and the time period while we were in school. There were Cheerleader, Dixie Darling, and Southern Belles uniforms. Not only was the Colonel uniform displayed, but Al Axe could still get into it. The current uniform was also displayed. Side note: Marsha Duke's Son is the Colonel for the 2002-2003 school year! There were items from the many Proms and Honors Dances, and lots of other memories. A display was set up for the two Band CDs and the Nostalgia Video. Both of which will be available from this website. The Reunion Committee gave awards to some of those deserving of special recognition.
We now have a bank account and are begining to build funds for future reunions and other events. You can now make donations to SGHS72. Please send checks made out to SGHS72 to 3301 So. Glenbrook; Garland, TX 75041; or to any of the Reunion Committee. We hope being more prepared next time will reduce ticket prices and expand our options. Be sure to participate in fundraisers and requests for donations in the future. Keep checking this page for updates and to help us find lost classmates from the list that will be provided. Please be sure to send your address updates to this website in the future. If you have an address for someone who does not have access to a computer, please be sure to send their address to us for them. ![]() |
